Three nocturnal MTB trails: technical notes

The Marinelli mountain hut
Reachable by mtb from Collina/Tolazzi hut (from Forni Avoltri if you want a more challenging outing) along a comfortable forest track with stiff, but not overly steep slopes. At the only junction after the Tolazzi hut, keep right and continue along the main track. Return by the same route. Indicative uphill time: 1 hour from the Tolazzi hut, 2 hours from Forni Avoltri. The hut can also be reached from Timau, beyond the village along the Passo di Monte Croce Carnico road. At the third bend, take the forest track that leads up the wild Val di Collina. From this side, the climb is much more challenging, as there are severe ramps to tackle and the last stretch is on a path that requires a good technique of biking in the mountains (some stretches on foot). Return by the same route. Indicative uphill time: 2 hours
Malga Pramosio
From the Avostanis lake, for the fittest. Starting from Cleulis/Laipacco, follow the signs to "Foresta di Pramosio” and gain height along the forest track which is never too steep, as far as the malga (shepherd’s summer hut). Experienced bikers can return along the CAI 403 trail, which several times crosses the forest track used to come up. Indicative time: 1 hour. Those who want to carry on to the splendid lake of Avostanis will be met by steep stretches alternating with lesser slopes. The last metres are hard to cycle on due to the loose surface and very steep angle (3 minutes on foot). At the top, there is shelter but no refreshments. Time: add an additional 45 minutes climb from the malga.
Monte Santo di Lussari
Departing from the gondola lift station at Camporosso, you reach Valbruna along the cycle path and then cycle up the Val Saisera on asphalt for a few kilometres. Then look out for a forest trail that starts on the left (signposted Monte Lussari). There follows a steep climb of 7 kilometres, before a stretch offering a breather and then the last effort, but now in sight of the hamlet. There are various options for the descent; the fastest, reserved for experienced cyclists, is along the Pilgrim trail. Indicative time: 2 hours.

Where to stay

Giuliano Piccoli

I’m 43, I was born and raised in the hills of Friuli. I cycle all over the region, especially in the eastern pre-alpine and alpine zone. In winter I enjoy skiing on the slopes and ski mountaineering. With a passion for regional history, I’m very interested in the historical and artistic events of Friuli’s lesser-known areas.
