In the home of Baron Revoltella

Walking through the streets of Trieste’s old town you arrive in via Diaz, in which you will find the prestigious Museo Revoltella. The project for the modern museum was undertaken by Carlo Scarpa and combines two different palazzi, and now houses a vast collection of nineteenth and twentieth-century paintings, as well as a number of contemporary artworks. But what makes the museum complex even finer is the historic palazzo that was home to Baron Pasquale Revoltella.

Of Venetian origin, he moved to Trieste where he made a fortune in the timber trade. He was one of the first shareholders of Assicurazioni Generali, a board member of Lloyd Austriaco and the vice president of the Suez Canal Company. His prestige and wealth grew to such an extent that in 1867 he was appointed Baron of the Empire. In the historic rooms of the palace, you can immerse yourself in a rich Belle Epoque atmosphere. The majestic staircase adorned with fountain leads to the upper two floors where you can admire the Baron’s private rooms and the reception rooms. The fabrics, furnishings and marble panelling all the walls make the residence a jewel worthy of a king. Looking at the perfectly preserved dining room one can immediately imagine the succulent banquets that were served by servants in livery on a table dressed with silverware and hand-decorated plates.

The various drawing rooms, each of a different colour, are ideal places in which to linger, either alone or in company. The ballroom, however, was the venue for glittering receptions, masked balls and quadrilles danced to the music of Mozart and Strauss. A small curiosity: the system of lenses at the corner of the rooms allowed the Baron to see who happened to be passing along the street while comfortably sitting on a couch!

Born in Modena, after a period in Milan I then moved to a place near Piacenza. Then university at Trieste, a master’s in Venice, two years in the Veneto and London, further experience in the province of Pesaro and, finally, my return to Trieste. Because one does not fall in love just with people, but also with places.
