Aquileia, a treasure chest

I took a trip to Udine a few days ago. It’s only an hour by train from Trieste, close enough for a day trip. I’ve been to Udine a few times, it’s a lovely town to spend some time in. You can walk around the old centre and go up to the castle, from where there are wonderful views of the town. The centre of Udine is full of shops and cafés and there are lots of pedestrian streets for leisurely strolls.
However, this time I had a particular reason for going there. I wanted to walk around to see the town’s street art. That’s how I found myself exploring new places and others I knew little about. But let’s start from the beginning. A few of the works are in the suburbs, others in the centre; Udine is quite a small town so I decided to go around on foot so I could explore it better.
The art work I liked most is the one in the bus station (near the railway station), by Tellas. l find it interesting because it’s clear to see that thought has gone into it, a study of the local area and of the specific site where it was created. In other words, it really seems made to be exactly where it is.
So, my advice is that if you’re anywhere near Udine and you feel like doing something different, explore the town to look for its many works of street art. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and I hope this project will continue to give new life to otherwise little-appreciated areas.
