Austro-Hungarian cemetery of Brazzano

Brazzano is a small village within the Municipality of Cormons (Gorizia), nestled between the Friulian Plain, the Judrio River and Collio. In 1915, it was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire but as it was located just a few kilometres from the border, the Italians occupied it since the first day of war. Taken over again by the Austro-Hungarians following the defeat of Caporetto, Brazzano was definitely annexed to the Kingdom of Italy after 04th November 1918.

Its municipal cemetery still has a section dedicated to the Austro-Hungarian soldiers who fell in this area during the Great War. To visit it, you need to head to Cormons and then follow directions for Cividale del Friuli along road SS356 until the village of Brazzano. When you enter the cemetery, you can see the tombs of the prisoners of the camp that was set here and the 282 soldiers who fell in this area, originally buried in Cormons.

The lawn is dotted with crosses in white stone while a number of tombstones are placed along the perimeter wall. Further on, you can see some iron crosses, where the remains of the camp prisoners rest. At the end, close to the perimeter wall, a large pyramidal monument with a rosette in the middle bears the wording "Freund und Feind / Im Tode vereint" (Friend or Enemy United in Death).
