There are places in Friuli which will truly leave you open mouthed! It seems almost impossible that a few minutes’ walk can take you to places as wonderful and magical as the Lumiei stream gorge.
After parking our car around 300 metres before the start of the Pala Pelosa tunnel (the tunnel before the Lumiei bridge), along the road from Ampezzo to Sauris, I and my trusted four legged friend Spank set off to discover the spectacular gorge called Sac di Coronis, almost 130 metres deep and just a few metres wide.
Getting to it requires a few minutes’ walk through a dense forest of mixed beech and spruce to a little metal bridge at Pedanca del Buso which enables us to cross the ultra-narrow Torrente Lumiei gorge, almost 50 metres deep here. Next a very steep path takes us to a wide gravel area at the Torrente Novatza stream bed.
The stream is closed off above by a spectacular gorge and, just a few dozen metres further down, it flows into the Torrente Lumiei gorge through a further gorge with rock faces on both sides.
A must is to walk up the gorge along a majestic corridor in stone accompanied only by the sound of the stream and the unmistakeable thunder of the wonderful waterfall plunging down before your eyes.
Just a small effort for such a fantastic place, to get deep into the most authentic and thrilling natural world.
A father with a passion for photography and video-making, I enjoy spending time in the outdoors with friends and organising events. Sufficiently touchy, and I’m easily bored… but never when I travel around my region.
