The Colle di
Muggia Vecchia (Old Muggia Hill) was originally an ancient hamlet that was inhabited until the end of the
15th century. This site has now been transformed into a fascinating
archaeological park.
Gradually abandoned in favour of settlements closer to the sea, this place has preserved its historical and cultural atmosphere.
Thanks to educational itineraries with detailed
information panels, visitors can explore and understand the
Roman and Late Antique artefacts of great historical interest discovered during archaeological excavations. These include the remains of
buildings, mosaics, tombs, the ancient city walls, the Sanctuary and the structure of medieval dwellings, as well as the main streets and open spaces that defined the original urban layout and other buildings that testify to the
historical and cultural importance of Muggia in those periods.
The basilica, now the
Church of Santa Maria Assunta, is the only surviving building of the
ancient settlement of Muggia Vecchia. It is a true architectural and artistic treasure from the Middle Ages. The interior is open to the public and preserves the
remains of frescoes and elements from the Roman period.
The archaeological area of Muggia is an important site of historical and cultural interest, offering visitors the opportunity to discover the rich history of the area and to admire and experience first-hand the authentic testimony of its ancient civilisation.
