Winter in Saisera paints the unspoilt spaces of this hidden valley white, revealing its treasures to those who walk through it at their own pace. A
natural heritage that enchanted Julius Kugy, poet and writer of the Julian Alps, and that preserves its charm during the winter season as well. Its unique microclimate and the trails that develop at the base of the imposing northern cliffs of
Montasio and Jof Fuart are home to horizons of snow and ice that can be walked, safely and without any particular technical difficulties, even by those who wish to discover these spectacular white landscapes on an adventure within the grasp of their boots.
Places that have witnessed the climbs of mountaineering greats and the tragic events of the
Great War, which had its front line here.
The
Saisera Wild Track, which follows a ring route along the bottom of the entire valley, flows past landscapes of rare beauty, through forests and open spaces on the river bed all the way up to the access to the Spragna, the gateway to the world of high mountain walls. A route for both adults and children, snowshoes and fat bikes, which can be tackled in its entirety over the approximately 11 km starting from the entrance to the valley or in a shorter way only on the upper section where the mountains jut out even further into the plain of the torrent.
Itinerary details:
From the parking area of the 'Saisera Hutte', the route winds its way through the entire Saisera Valley along a beaten track with a moderate total ascent, accessible to all. A winter hike through untouched forests and clearings, while remaining close to the huts and farmhouses in the valley, ideal locations for a break to enjoy local gastronomic specialities. On the way, it is possible to leave the Wild Track to visit the Austro-Hungarian military posts in the Sasso Forato area. Finally, completing the route, you will pass over the Spragna Bridge, at the base of the cliffs in a landscape that is, to say the least, impressive.
Approximate walking time: 3.00 hours.
It is only possible to walk the trail with snowshoes when there is fresh snow, as the trails are usually groomed and prepared
