Grotta Priamo - Stage 1

This cavity (also known as Grotta della Mandibola) is the first stage of the Park, easily reached by leaving the main path near the totem and following the path through the vegetation to the left for a few metres.

It is a small cave, about twenty metres long and 8 metres deep, used by the soldiers as a shelter. Like many other caves of the Karst in Trieste and Isonzo, this one was also re-adapted for military uses by modifying the opening and the internal spaces to allow the soldiers to enter and exit quickly.

After recent works, the entry wall and the steps are clearly visible, these were used to access the main chamber, which is about 2,5 metres high and the same in width.  The blackened walls are proof of the fires that were lit inside this cave and the explosives which were used to obtain more space, such as the recesses visible on the right.

To visit the cave it is advisable to be very careful as the ground can be slippery and visibility scarce. It is important to wear suitable shoes and have a torch.
