The Cave of the 8 guns, also known as Cave of the 3rd Corp 310th Division, can be reached via the trail departing from the left of the cabin, walking along an old trench excavated in the rock. Here, you can notice the artillery positions and the recesses in the mountain that worked as ammo reserves or shelters for soldiers. At the end of the stairway, on the left, there is the entrance of the tunnel dug by the Italians, which ends with an observatory post overlooking Mt. Vodice.
Walking through the tunnel, visitors can observe some openings leading to the gun posts on the right, while on the left a number of passageways connect to the external walkway, which runs parallel to the tunnel. A total of guns were installed here and we can still see the rings used to pull the heavy weaponry in the cavity through the pulleys.
During the visit, we recommend walking through the tunnels and the caves first (from where you can see a section of the Isonzo) and then go back to the departure point taking the same track. From here, other trails lead to an extensive tunnel network and the summit of Mt. Sabotin. The trench was built right after the mount was taken over by the Italians in order to improve the defensive line on the Isonzo gorge and prevent possible counter-attacks by the Austrian-Habsburg Army.
