Fort of Mt. Bernadia-Lonza

Not far from the old Austro-Hungarian border of the early 900's, you can visit the Fort of Mt. Bernadia-Monte Lonza. Built in 1910 at approximately 800 metres ASL, it was part of the defensive system of the central section of the Tagliamento River, in particular around the Torre creek. The system was completed by the permanent artillery batteries of mounts Pocivalo, Campeon, Faeit, Ciuc dal Ronco and the Fort of Adorgnano (the last two are now completely gone).

Like other similar military installations, it was outgunned as early as October 1917 and never affected by the Great War. It is worth a visit though, given its excellent state of preservation and the great views it offers across the Friulian plain and the Julian Pre-Alps.

Once you reach the fort esplanade on the road departing from Tarcento, you can start your visit by descending the stairs on the left leading to the positions for riflemen who used to preside over the moat. Behind, you can clearly see the rooms working as ammo and bullet reserves.
Back to the ground floor, you can visit the housing for soldiers and the lift that used to supply ammo to the battery on the top of the fort. The upper floor consisted of five rooms and some stairs leading to the positions accommodating four 149 mm steel guns.
