Artillery battery of Mt. Campeon

Behind the Fort of Mt. Bernadia there is a small mountain ridge formed by mounts Campeon and Faeit. These two peaks of moderate height (less than 750 metres ASL) were key for the defence of the border and the central section of the Tagliamento River. Italian army commanders had built here, near Sammardenchia (Municipality of Tarcento), some small barracks, deposits, storehouses and an open-air (no protective roof) permanent artillery battery with four 149mm guns.

Taking a trail near Flaipano, a hamlet of Montenars, walk through the woods of Mt. Campeon and easily reach the top followed, further on, by the remains of the Great War. Still clearly visible are the ruins of storehouses and barracks, the emplacements where guns were installed and, especially, a perfectly preserved small ammo reserve bearing the date 1909. In addition, despite the modest height, from here you can enjoy great views across the Friulian hills and plain.
