The
Castle of Rocca Bernarda, initially an estate of the Patriarchate of Aquileia, was then donated to the community of
Cividale, which in the 15th century left it to the Capiferro family, a family of Roman origin.
With Ippolito Valvason, who had inherited the complex, and with his son Bernardo (to whom it is dedicated), the
fortified residence was built and completed in 1567. Afterwards, after various property transfers, the fortress passed to the Perusini family.
This sixteenth-century beautiful complex is situated in the middle of a
large park on the hill that stretches around flourishing vineyards.
Thanks to the devotion and competence of Gaetano Perusini, the growing of Picolit wine grapes developed on these hills, over the years becoming famous all over the world. Today it is the
location of a winery belonging, like the whole complex, to the Military Sovereign Order of Malta.
