The historic Park of ramparts and passageways is the most important and probably most interesting part of the visit for visitors to Palmanova fortress.
The city is girded by three circles of fortifications, dating back respectively to its foundation (1593 - 1620), to the 17th century (1665 - 1683), and to the Napoleonic period (1806 - 1809). Many fortified elements and types of embankments are recognisable in the historical park: ramparts, curtains, ravelins, faussebrayes, lunettes, esplanades, outer doors testify to the development of military architecture over time. The cycle paths of the Park, well signposted, are suitable for everyone.
The underground passageways date back to the 17th century. They were used to reach enemy positions, under which rooms could be built and filled with gunpowder and then exploded. Some passageways are now suitable for visiting with the help of an audio guide.
