Cycling in the village of orchids

Osoppo is a small town near Gemona del Friuli, and is famous for its hill and fortress, which is of great historical and natural interest, and is indeed listed as a “national monument”.

But it is not only the historical and cultural aspects that should convince you to visit this area of ??Friuli Venezia Giulia: its green landscapes are perfect for walks and bike rides, which can also be tackled if you’re unfit because they are almost all on flat terrain.

In the surroundings of Osoppo, 33 species of will orchids have been identified: to enhance this peculiarity, the Festival of Orchids has been established, which takes place every year in this period, when they are in flower. A whole weekend is dedicated to these flowers, with flea markets, conferences, workshops and especially guided tours, both on foot and by bicycle, to discover the nature trails dedicated to them.

Here is my cycle route! I left from Parco del Rivellino and having passed through the whole park and followed the road that leads towards the motorway overpass, I turned left, passing in front of the Parco delle Colonie to arrive near the church of the village.

At the roundabout, I took the second exit and continued in Via S. Martino (behind the new theatre). At the end of Via S. Martino I found myself at a crossroads, with a farm in front of me. Here I turned right where you can also visit the church of San Rocco. Along this road I found one of the descriptive panels concerning wild plants and orchids that can be found in these meadows. At the end of the dirt track, I turned left and left again at the next junction, to trace out a circular route ending in Via Bars. Then I turned into Via Peonis and Via Amalteo to return to Via S. Martino via Via delle Braide.

I covered a total of 13 km mainly on the flat, without any difficulty! The route is suitable for everyone and is wonderful, also because it is mainly shaded. Here is the route map.
