St. Adalbert Cathedral

St. Adalbert's Cathedral is accessed walking up the imposing and showy flight of steps.

The Cathedral, built between 1736 and 1760, incorporates the old 13th-century St. Adalbert's church.

Characterized by a one-nave structure with a late Baroque altar, St. Adalbert's Cathedral is still surrounded by the remains of the ancient medieval town.

Its façade is divided by four pilasters. It is possible to observe a tympanum with an hexagonal golden wrought iron rose window and three statues: the Virgin at the centre, St. Adalbert on the left and St. Philip Neri, the patron saint of the municipality of Cormòns, on the right. The altar-pieces of the side altars are attributed to Giuseppe Tominz, while the sixteenth-century Pietà Altar is a work by sculptor Carlo da Corona.

The interior features important sixteenth-century works of art and in the basement twenty funeral chambers preserve the remains of sepulchres of the 17th century.

Thanks to the perfect climate conditions, some of the buried bodies almost underwent a natural mummification process similar to the case of the mummies of Venzone.

Finally, the bell tower, the second highest in Gorizia's diocese after that of Aquileia, is still that of the old church. However, the original Venetian spire was replaced with a copper covering.
