Guarneriana Library

In the central square of San Daniele del Friuli, on the right hand side of the cathedral, there is a building which was once the former Town Hall. Now it houses the Guarneriana Library founded in 1466. It is the oldest public library in Friuli.

The library was initially created to accept the bequest of 173 codices by fifteenth-century humanist. Guarniero d'Artegna. The collection increased over time and in the 18th century it was particularly enriched thanks to the donation by Archbishop Giusto Fontanini of thousands of volumes.

It now contains dozens of codices in humanities, many of which are beautifully decorated manuscripts, and 80 incunabula including IustinianiCostitutiones of 1482 which has a miniature of Antonio Maria of Padua.

Among the codices there is a Byzantine Bible (late 12th century) and a Divine Comedy (end of the 14th century).
