The small hamlet of San Volfango (Municipality of Drenchia) is located at 722 metres ASL and is home to a monument dedicated to fallen soldiers, near the municipal cemetery. This graveyard dates from 1917 and used to be a war cemetery, accommodating the remains of around 500 bodies, including Alpine Corps privateRiccardo di Giusto, the first soldier who fell in WW I. In 1923, all the remains were moved to the Ossuary-Templeof Udine and the cemetery was converted to civil use.
Today, on the top of a staircase, you can see a large monument built by locals and dedicated to casualties of all wars. The imposing, pyramidal construction features four sides and an iron cross on the top. It can be reached via a small road on the left before entering the hamlet or, alternatively, from the stairs of the municipal cemetery, which, along with the fence, were part of the original cemetery. A ceremony in honour of the fallen soldiers is held here annually on November 04th.
This hamlet, historically one of the most important within the Municipality of Drenchia, used to host also an elementary school dedicated to Riccardo Di Giusto.
