Inscription of the Susa Battalion and tunnel

After a few dozen metres from the Lanza Fork, you reach the start of the "Walk of trenches", under the crest of the Zermula massif. Here, you can admire the first remains of the Great War: a defensive wall (partly collapsed), some cement emplacements, a giant inscription dating back to August 1916 and the entrance of a tunnel.

The precious inscription was left by the 35th Alpine Corps Susa Battalion, included in the 3rd Regiment from Piedmont. Following the taking of Gorizia, the soldiers carved the following celebratory words on rock: "This Carnic Alp was of Piedmont as much as love and valour with which it was defended by the Susa Battalion against enemy offense. And now that the glory of Gorizia rises from the east just like the sun, they hereby chant not just hope but the certainty of the glory for Italy. August 1916".

Next to the inscription, you can clearly see the entrance of a military tunnel excavated across the mountain and leading to an observation post. Although some parts have collapsed (especially in the middle, so helmets are recommended), it can be easily walked through. After about 15 metres, you reach the other side of the mountain. From this privileged point, you can admire all the mountains to the north as well as Cason di Lanza Pass below. Going back, above the tunnel entrance, you can observe some wooden planks and the layer of concrete used to reinforce the structure and prevent possible collapse.
