Remains of a machine-gun pit

After the Italians retreated to the line along the Piave River in autumn 1917, Friuli and part of Veneto were occupied by Austro-Hungarian forces. The occupation, which ended in the following year with the signing of an armistice, left an important structure on the banks of the Tagliamento River, within the Municipality of Ragogna. Here, in fact, the Austrian army command built an entrenched camp for defensive purposes, in the event that the Italians broke through the front again.

The fortification dates back to 1918 and was built by the cadets of a Military Engineering School. The first thing you notice is a machine-gun pit, which can only be viewed from outside (it is now located on private land). Here too there is a plaque (partly destroyed) affixed by the 4th Division of the Technical School of Vienna.
