Tombstones of the former war cemetery

Soon after you exit from the woods shading the first stretch of CAI trail No. 609, you can see the first remains of the Great War. At a hairpin turn on your right, there are some tombstones of the former war cemetery that used to accommodate the Italian soldiers who fell here between summer 1915 and 1917.

Today, we can see the remains of about 6 tombstones, 3 of which are completely intact. They still show some simple decorations, made by arranging some pebbles on the wet cement. A sort of cross stands in the centre, while a serpentine was drawn on the sides.
Above, a large wooden crucifix by local artist Roberto Filaferro was placed in 2010 in memory of the fallen soldiers. The plaque at the base of the crucifix shows the following words (in Friulian language): "Par segnâl, une crosute / je scolpide li tal cret: / fra chês stelis nàs l'erbute / sot di lôr i duàr cuiet" (As a sign, a small cross is carved there on the rock: grass is growing in between these stones, I rest in peace underneath).
