Near the summit of Mt. Jôf di Somdogna, you can admire the remains of some military fortifications dating back to the Great War. Some of them, despite their poor state and the action of weather, are well preserved and may give visitors an idea of their use.
One of the most interesting remains is undoubtedly the structure now known as Kopfach Shelter. It is a very small building suitable to accommodate 2-3 persons for a break but during the War it worked as an observatory post. Through its windows, you can clearly see the mountains to the east, the northern side of Mt. Jôf di Montasio and the Saisera Valley below, which used to border the Austro-Hungarian Empire at that time. Both the exterior and the interior of the buildings are still well preserved: outside, you can see some defensive walls and a staircase leading to the rooftop, while inside there are some furniture, a small stove and a guestbook.
Particularly interesting is the large frieze featuring two crossed cannons, symbol of the Alpine Corps Artillery, and an image with the profile of the surrounding mountains dating from the 1950's.
