The embrace of the Pievi

The embrace of the Pievi

An embrace among the mountains protected not only by nature but also by the spiritual contact of these wonderful places: the Pievi.
I am talking about a 260 km trekking route with 20 stops along which you can admire 10 Carnic Pievi and two sanctuaries.
The map that shows the route looks like an embrace, a circle in which to discover oneself and the suggestive land. This route can be read in so many ways that it is truly unique: faith, history, art, nature and also traditions. As is written at the beginning of the booklet that every year shows the stops, the Walk of the Pievi is “Healing of the soul and health of the body”.
There is also an important curiosity about their topographical location. On the one hand, the Pievi were a useful strategic defence route but if we read Angelo Floramo, doctor of Medieval History and graduate in medieval Latin Philology, it turns out that this position overlaps the Virgo constellation. The trek starts at Imponzo to reach Illegio (home to an annual exhibition that is a true flagship of the region); you arrive in Tolmezzo and continue to Forni di Sopra through Cesclans, Verzegnis, Villa Santina, Raveo, Enemonzo, Socchieve and Forni di Sotto.
The initial route is easy and gradually gets more challenging in the length and slopes. From Forni di Sopra you change valley to reach Sappada after passing through Sauris. You then proceed through the other stops until reaching Timau, whose mountains hold many stories of the period of the First World War, including those of the Carnic carriers. Finally, you arrive at the Pieve di Zuglio (the ancient Iulium Carnicum, the northernmost Roman city in Italy). Here the kiss of the crosses, an ancient and symbolic ritual, takes place every year.
