The surroundings of the Pass of Monte Croce Carnico or Plöckenpass offer a wide range of opportunities to climbing enthusiasts and the area is now one of the most important and well-known, even internationally, of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region. Near the Pass of Monte Croce Carnico there are in fact many cliffs, with over 250 routes with difficulty from 4 to 8c.
The development of climbing began here in the early 80s. The systematic equipment of the itineraries had a first impulse in the late '80s, on the occasion of the non-competitive meeting Arrampicarnia and continued in the following years, due to the work of Friulian and Austrian climbers. Below two "historical" cliffs are being described: the Scogliera and the adjacent Emmenthal.
Access
From Paluzza follow the state road 52bis to the Pass of Monte Croce Carnico (17 km from Paluzza). From the main carpark on top of the pass, at the back of the former barracks of the military police force, begins the wide CAI 401 trail, directed to Kleiner Pal, which leads in 15 minutes to the base of the Emmental and from here continues along the base of the adjacent and large rock wall of the Scogliera.
This route is included in the TOP 20 FREE CLIMBING guide, made in collaboration with Tabacco Maps, and can be purchased here
