The peculiar environmental conditions and the difficulties of connection with the bordering towns have allowed to keep its traditions unchanged both in the language - a high-German dialect - and in the gastronomy and in the religious feasts and folk festivals, such as the Carnival, whose protagonists are the Rölar, covered in soot and carrying noisy bells, and the Kheirar, who carries a big broom.
In Sauris, a town unique for its history, ancient traditions and natural beauties, Carnival is extremely charming and mysterious. The Carnival of Sauris, one of the most ancient Carnivals in the Alps, is characterized by the traditional use of wooden masks and by peculiar dress-ups, made using all kinds of materials and garments found in the most remote spots of one’s home, in the cellars or in the attics.
At dusk the procession of masks, , led by the two main figures the Rölar and the Kheirar, and spectators-tourists gathers in the small square of Sauris di Sopra to start the charming night walk in the soft light of the lanterns. The point of arrival will be in Sauris di Sotto, where the celebrations will continue with the tasting of traditional local dishes, music, dances and great fun.
