Zen and Haiku - FEFF 2026

Description

Matsuo Bashō, the undisputed master of haiku, chose not to become a monk but rather to dedicate his life to the “Way of Poetry,” yet his entire oeuvre is deeply imbued with Zen principles. In this fascinating talk led by professor of classical Japanese Aldo Tollini, we will discover the subtle boundaries between spirituality and composition. Through the presentation of an essay on the topic, we will explore Bashō’s humble and essential lifestyle, focusing on two pillars that made his verses immortal: makoto (absolute sincerity) and the renunciation of ego. An authentic journey into the soul of Japan.
