The Circolo Marina Mercantile "N.Sauro" A.S.D. and Economist – Nautical Sector are organizing the "Trofeo Ponterosso," an international canoe polo tournament, on September 19th, 20th, and 21st.
The event, which as is now traditional, will take place in the Ponterosso Canal, begins on Friday, September 19th at 3:00 PM with the Under-14 Ponterosso Trophy, featuring athletes from Sicily and Liguria for the first time. In addition to three teams made up of young local athletes, Canottieri Jonica, Arenzano, and Cus Udine will participate.
On Saturday morning, September 20th, the Trophy matches for the first division (overall) and the second division (under-18, women's teams, and Serie B teams) will begin at 9:00 AM. Matches will be played continuously at 35-minute intervals on the two playing fields and will conclude at 7:30 PM.
On Sunday, September 22, matches will resume at 8:30 a.m. and conclude at 4:00 p.m., with the first division final taking place at 4:30 p.m.
A total of 20 teams will play on Saturday and Sunday, representing a record six nations: Hungary, the Czech Republic, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and Italy. The reigning Italian champions (Canottieri Icnusa di Cagliari) will be participating in the Ponterosso Trophy for the first time, and three athletes from Canoe Rovigo (Maddalena Lago, Veronica Mazzanti, and Chiara Trevisan) will be in Trieste, having placed fourth at the recent World Games in China.
The initiative, now in its thirteenth edition and a classic in the Trieste sports calendar, aims to raise awareness and appreciation, not only within the city but beyond, of the unique characteristics of canoe polo, a sport similar in some ways to water polo but played in a canoe. A new feature for the 2025 edition will be the addition of a second grandstand: in addition to the "historic" grandstand set up alongside the main pitch, another will be set up alongside the second pitch to give even greater visibility to the youth and less experienced teams.
In past editions, this event has attracted high attendances thanks to the spectacular action and the splendid setting of the Ponterosso canal, achieving a success beyond expectations, with peak attendances of over 500 spectators.
