Wilhelm Heiliger exhibition "Transformations - Transformacije"

Description

A concise yet profound look at Wilhelm Heiliger's diverse and rich artistic career is offered at the Portopiccolo Art Gallery in Sistiana (Duino Aurisina – TS) with the exhibition "Transformazioni / Transformacije," curated by Pavla Jarc, opening Saturday, May 16, at 6:00 PM. The exhibition is organized by the Casa Cave Cultural Association and promoted by the Municipality of Duino Aurisina as part of the "Kamen" project.

The selection of paintings, works on paper, photography, and sculptures reveals the main developments in Wilhelm Heiliger's creative thinking and illuminates the artist's ongoing artistic research for over fifty years.

While drawing on some traditional principles of modernist painting, his creations consistently reveal an original approach to visual themes, a deeply personal iconography, and a blend of the philosophy of play and the meditative world of Eastern thought—particularly Zen Buddhism, which the artist has internalized as a way to perceive metaphysical reality beyond the illusions of the visible. His abstract works invite the viewer to grasp their rhythm and experience them as a sensitive vibration of the spirit, opening the door to intense experience and aesthetic pleasure.
"Heiliger is primarily interested in the concept of the purified pictorial work," explains Pavia Jarc, "typical of so-called concrete art, which developed in the second decade of the 20th century and deals exclusively with autonomous pictorial elements such as color, light, line, and form. As the German theorist Siegfried J. Schmidt emphasizes, it is a mimetic and generative art, which obliterates the sensory perception of visible reality and focuses on the thematization of its own expressive means. It is precisely in this seemingly autonomous field of pictorial elements that Heiliger's space for play unfolds—an open sphere of perception, transformation, and inner experience."

The exhibition is open until Sunday, June 21, 2026, with the following hours:

Saturday 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM, Sunday 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM / 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM, or by appointment at +39 3334344188
