Fritz Lang's 1927 film is set in 2026 and depicts a dystopian future in which a small circle of industrialists rules a city-state of towering skyscrapers. The industrialists live among the clouds, while millions of exploited workers survive in the urban slums and keep society going with their labour. At the top of the pyramid is Johann Fredersen, whose son Freder enjoys a privileged life of excess and luxury until he meets Maria, a teacher from the slums who has strayed into his Eden.
Needless to say, after almost 100 years, the film is still highly relevant. Hence the idea of reviving it in 2026 to give space to Lang's avant-garde vision. Karim Qqru, Roberta Sammarelli, Xabier Iriondo and Corrado Nuccini have created a musical score based on the images of one of the greatest masterpieces in the history of cinema. The soundscape created by the four musicians blends with the images, breathing new life into the film and combining the visual mastery of expressionist cinema with the emotional power of live music in what is a veritable concert in the service of the film.
