Libya in the work of Marcello Dudovich

Description

At the dawn of the twentieth century, Trieste-born Marcello Dudovich was just over twenty years old. Already recognised as a highly promising young poster artist, he began his career in Bologna, where he quickly won numerous prizes in the city’s annual design competitions. He would soon join the prestigious Officine Grafiche Ricordi in Milan, where his talent truly came into its own. His posters broke free from the decorative and allegorical conventions of Art Nouveau, embracing instead a strikingly modern visual language built on formal simplicity and bold expanses of flat, unshaded colour. Elegant, captivating women lay at the heart of his advertising imagery, becoming the hallmark of his work and earning him his rightful place as the foremost Italian poster artist of the twentieth century. His early years, up to around 1910– 1912, were the most original and creatively fertile of his career. During this period he produced some of his finest posters for leading brands including Campari, Borsalino, Strega, Uliveto and Fonotipia, but above all for the Mele brothers’ renowned department stores in Naples. Together, these works form a gallery of images whose visual power remains as striking today as ever.
