Description
Painting that is slow, contemplative and timeless, with a specific order underlying every stroke. Landscapes and beaches, trains, boats, a table, chair, fountain, tree or pack of cards are immersed in a silent atmosphere, shrouded in clear, diffused light. A profound stillness imbued with calm and serenity. Metaphysical everyday life, as it is described by critics and art historians Decio Gioseffi and Sergio Molesi, that excludes human figures, but highlights their imprint and artefacts, placing them in a well-defined space and rarefied time. Or rather, psychological realism with a wealth of symbolic evocation in the structure of the composition, always simple and sober in nature. A hundred years after his birth, the exhibition pays homage to Marino Sormani (Aurisina 1926-1995), displaying around fifty works exploring the stylistic evolution of the artist from Trieste, always very attentive both to graphic elements and colour. Notebooks and albums packed with drawings and sketches are followed by his exploration of oil painting in the early 1950s, with works of considerable chromatic intensity - including some from his Paris period - to conclude with canvases illustrating his full artistic maturity, in which he lightens the colour palette, abandoning oil paint for the old egg tempera technique, enfolding the subject in a morning light that makes him instantly recognisable. Alongside the paintings, there are a number of exploratory graphic designs, where the pleasure of pure, clear lines, without any reconsideration, reminds us how important order was for Sormani, “order with a capital O”, as he himself said.
