The second title in the trilogy created by the genius of Salzburg in collaboration with the poet Lorenzo Da Ponte, Don Giovanni breathes new life and striking contemporary relevance into one of Western culture’s great myths: the unrepentant seducer who dares to challenge the forces of heaven, a figure who has inspired authors such as Tirso de Molina, Molière and Carlo Goldoni over the centuries. The extraordinary psychological depth of the characters, combined with the interplay of dramatic and comic elements capable of evoking a wide range of emotions—from laughter to horror, from compassion to anguish—makes Mozart’s dramma giocoso a truly unique work.
This new production of Don Giovanni by the Teatro Lirico Giuseppe Verdi of Trieste features direction, sets and costumes by the master of international theatre Pier Luigi Pizzi, supported by his creative team led by Massimo Pizzi Gasparon Contarini. On the podium is Enrico Calesso, music director of the Trieste opera house, widely recognised for his ability to bring formal clarity, vividness and meticulous attention to timbre in Mozart’s operas.
