From the creator of Die Fledermaus and On the Beautiful Blue Danube, a cheerful and light-hearted operetta first performed in 1883. The genesis of A Night in Venice is marked by several curiosities, all linked to Johann Strauss’s private life: it was composed between his second and third marriages, a situation that significantly affected its writing, which was repeatedly interrupted. Paradoxically, this may have contributed to its success, as when Strauss returned to complete the work he did so with renewed energy and enthusiasm.
During the carnival season, the Duke of Urbino, a notorious womaniser, embarks on his amorous adventures, assisted by his barber Caramello. Their story intertwines with the playful intrigues of noblewomen and commoners alike, who take advantage of carnival disguises to enjoy a taste of carefree freedom. After much confusion, all couples are finally reunited in a traditional happy ending.
A Night in Venice offers a charming outsider’s view of Italy: full of stereotypes, but above all of infectious joy, reflected in the dazzling music of the “King of the Waltz”, alternating between tender arias, polkas and mazurkas that have become part of music history.
