Art has always been my great passion. I started taking photographs at the age of 18 with an analogue Canon, which I bought after my summer job as a student. I haven’t stopped since. I have worked as a professional photographer in Italy and England and as the head of the photographic archive at the Dulwich Picture Gallery in London. I have always visited museums, galleries and underground art spaces. Unconsciously, years ago, when I was still living and working in London, I began photographing the toilets in the art spaces I happened to visit. Looking back at the first set of images—initially simple snapshots—I began to focus on certain elements present in the various toilets I was photographing, details to which we normally do not pay much attention. I was looking for a correlation between the stylistic character of the toilet and the atmosphere of the exhibition space. The ARTY TOILETS project was born in this context and aims to highlight the elective affinity that arises between works of art and their surrounding environments.
believe that the quest for beauty which drives us to enter a museum or exhibition space projects our desires onto the works on display as well as onto the surrounding spaces, even the most vernacular and seemingly less valuable ones. I believe we should hold on to this feeling even when we leave the galleries, to prolong this quest for wonder and beauty for as long as possible, extending it far beyond the spaces normally dedicated to it. With the hope that beauty will save the world!
