Muggia Castle

Muggia (TS)

The Castle of Muggia, built in 1374, is a rectangular building made of square sandstone ashlars, strategically located above the "Mandracchio", the port of the city. Originally the castle had two towers, while the perimeter of the outer walls remained intact, with its still majestic entrance door and gate of the military patrol, as well as several loopholes.
Intertwined with the history of Muggia and the struggles between Venice and the Patriarchate of Aquileia under Maximilian I and Trieste, the castle served as a military fortress until 1700, then fell into disuse for a long time. In 1991, the sculptor Villi Bossi bought the castle in a state of decay, restoring dignity to this fortress.
Today the Bossi spouses organize weddings, even civil ceremonies, up to about 70 people. It is also home to cultural events, where prose and music come together, with the aim of ensuring that these walls, once only defensive, can today also protect the spirit and art.
