Fifth stage of the Kobarid (Caporetto)–Cividale del Friuli/Čedad loop, a pleasant nature excursion through the Natisone/Nadiške doline Valleys and Mount Matajur.
A stage focused on natural beauties leading through the Natisone Valleys, entering a fascinating territory of woods, mountains, and the splendid waters of the Natisone River which quietly preserve the memory of one of the crucial moments of the First World War. The highest peak of the area, Mount Matajur (1642 m), is seen as a symbol between Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Slovenia. Although no visible traces remain, historically this area is remembered for the action of the young lieutenant Erwin Rommel, who between October 24 and 26, 1917, moved from Tolmin and reached first Kolovrat/Colovrat and then Matajur, contributing to the success of the Austro-German plan that led to the Caporetto Retreat.
Derived from the technical difficulty and the stamina requirements.
In winter, the ascent is recommended only for experienced people due to the probable presence of snow and ice (possible also from late October to late April).
The stage departure is located near the SMO (Slovensko Multimedialno Okno) from which you reach the church of San Pietro Apostolo and Via dei Klancic, leading towards Clenia/Klenje. Shortly after the first hairpin bend, from a dirt clearing starts trail CAI 749 which leads to Mount Matajur through pleasant wooded areas and villages with intact local traditional architecture and ethnographic museums. Upon reaching Mezzana/Mečana, continue on the same trail towards Glevizza/Hlevišča and Montemaggiore/Matajur, the real starting point of the ascent to the summit where you can enjoy a splendid view from the small church located there. From here, finally, you descend along trail CAI 736 down to Pelizzo Refuge.
