Blessed with natural beauty, this itinerary leads to historically and culturally significant sites. The village of Šmartno, built in the 16th century as a medieval fortress against the Turks and still surrounded by walls, overlooks the splendid Brda wine region (the Collio of Slovenia), which is also interesting for its gastronomic heritage and culture. The route then leads to the slopes of Mount Sabotin and the city of Nova Gorica, with its historical square: Trg Europe/Piazza della Transalpina, a symbol friendship between nations. During the First World War, up to the Sixth Battle of the Isonzo, Mount Sabotin played an important strategic role in the defensive line of the Gorizia/Gorica area, which is reflected in the numerous remains that still mark its surface. Today, the entire area is proud to be the home to the Park of Peace Outdoor Museum and the “Walk of Peace” Visitor Centre.
Author’s recommendation
The Hiša Kulture and the Briška Hiša in Šmartno are particularly interesting and well worth a visit.
Another attraction is the Solkan railway bridge featuring the longest stone archway in the world.
