Established in 1996, the Val Rosandra Regional Nature Reserve covers a surface area of about 746 hectares in the municipality of San Dorligo della Valle - Dolina, in the southeastern part of Trieste province. It encloses a
valley carved out by the Rosandra stream, and as the area is a meeting point between the mountainous terrain and the coast, it is home to many animal species, some Central European and others belonging to the Mediterranean ecosystem.
The two sides of the valley of the Val Rosandra Regional Nature Reserve are
geologically very different: the sunny northeast slope of vertical flysch walls has a mostly warm temperate climate, while a cold climate prevails on the southwestern slope of mainly scree which is exposed to the wind and has no direct sunlight. The
Bora wind blows through this natural passage, from the inland to the coast, thus contributing to the creation of a unique, varied microclimate.
In the Val Rosandra Regional Nature Reserve many itineraries lead to caves with ancient inscriptions, or to the ruins of castles and hill forts, running alongside streams to viewpoints offering
stunning panoramas over the gulf of Trieste. The valley also boasts a
36-meter waterfall on the Rosandra stream and the
ruins of a Roman aqueduct which lies along the first stretch of the "Sentiero dell'amicizia - Pot prijateljstva" footpath. A former railway line passes through Val Rosandra and has now been turned into a cycling footpath.
