Highly rewarding route along the southern side of Monte Matajur, with a small summit loop.
We leave the car at Masseris (760 m), in the small parking lot before the village. We continue on the road until we spot the trail marker for Matajur on the right – marker 736a. After an initial steep slope, the surface changes into a good mule track, always ascending. We walk in the forest, steadily uphill, until Tamorska clearing (1090 m). Here we cross the dirt road and continue uphill on the path that cuts across a switchback of the forest road, which we soon rejoin. The trail now branches off to the left, clearly marked. At 1235 m we ignore the junction for Pelizzo Refuge and continue until the next junction, which leads us to one of the most beautiful sections of the hike: the Rommel Road, flat for a nice stretch and winding along the slopes of Monte Glava. At 1440 m (sign) we take the uphill path, reaching roughly one of the summits of Monte Glava (1519 m, for views towards the long ridges of the Slovenian side and Monte Nero). The last climb outside the forest leads to the Christ the Redeemer chapel (1641 m).
To descend making a small summit loop, we go down taking the path that starts opposite the chapel entrance and within minutes brings us to Dom Na Matajure (1550 m), a refuge built and run by volunteers of the Planinska družina Benečije. We take the path eastwards towards Liucco/Livek and reach the Rommel sign; from here, we descend the way we came up.
