Lago di Mediana is a small but charming alpine water mirror, hidden among the woods under the homonymous casera, in a naturalistic setting of great charm and tranquility. The hike to this small lake unfolds in a varied environment, rich in vegetation and panoramic views stretching from the peaks of Bivera, Clap Savon, Tiarfin and Brentoni up to embracing the entire valley of Sauris and the Carnia reliefs.

The route initially follows trail CAI 210, in wide high-altitude pastures allowing views of the surrounding peaks. Then it continues on CAI 209, entering quiet and increasingly dense fir forests. Right in the middle of these peaceful trees, a recently restored path leads shortly to Lago di Mediana, nestled like a green gem between firs and sky.

The small lake is the ideal place for a relaxing break, immersed in the silence of nature, among the scents of the underbrush and the sound of the wind among the firs. The environment is also perfect for those who love nature photography or simply for those seeking a still little-frequented mountain spot, far from the most beaten routes to enjoy a moment of deep peace.

An accessible and rewarding hike that combines the beauty of the alpine landscape with the pleasure of discovering a hidden and quiet corner of Carnia, ideal in summer and autumn days.

    Author’s recommendation

Casera Razzo, when open, offers catering services, sale of dairy products, and accommodation options, while the renovated Casera Mediana only offers catering and sale of local products.

    Safety information

Hike not to be undertaken in case of uncertain weather (the final descent to the small lake is rather steep and slippery when wet).

Along the hike, water sources are few and, despite the shortness of the route, consider carrying an adequate amount of water supplies.

    Public transport

It is not possible to reach the Passo di Razzo by public transport.

    Directions

For those coming from the A23 Udine–Tarvisio highway, it is recommended to exit at the Carnia toll booth and continue towards Tolmezzo and Villa Santina along the SS 52. After passing the town of Ovaro, take SS 355 and shortly after, turn left crossing the bridge over the Degano stream. From here follow SS 465 towards Prato Carnico and continue to ascend the valley until reaching the Forcella Lavardet junction (road to Campolongo and Vigo di Cadore closed). Then continue on SP 619 until the junction that allows descent to Sauris di Sopra; after passing the latter, you arrive at Sella di Razzo, where parking is possible near Casera Razzo.

Sella di Razzo is also reachable from Sauris di Sopra, but the easier and smoother road remains the one described above.
