First stage of the Carnic traverse. The start is at the village of S. Candido, in Val Pusteria, and the route includes an ascent up the long ridge of M. Elmo to the Sillaner Hutte.

From the village of St. Candido, near the end of Via Freising, the trail enters the forest with a long section that ascends the first elevations of Monte Elmo. The directive of the first part of the ascent is given by trail marker No. 4. With a shady path through the forest, you gradually gain altitude on a wide mule track, reaching the arrival of the lift that climbs from the hamlet of Moso (it is possible in this sense to take advantage of the lift to gain the ridge of M. Elmo, effectively eliminating the first stage). Having passed near the"Reinold Messner Haus," you continue without any possibility of error along the dirt road that cuts obliquely across the meadow ridges, in view of the Sexten Dolomites.

Just before the Sillaner Hutte the route meets that of the Karnischer Hoenweg (Austrian Carnic traverse).

A short steeper section precedes the arrival at the hut located in a splendid panoramic position.

    Author’s recommendation

Possibility of direct ascent to M. Elmo via the ski lift that starts in the hamlet of Moso.

    Tips and suggestions

Recommended hike from June to September depending on the seasonal opening of shelters.

    Roadbook

At the end of the Freising road, near the old town center of S. Candido, the signs for route #4 guide you to ascend on a mule track/ dirt road with a long, gentle ascent into the forest.

Near the Waldkapelle you keep to the left, climbing logically and clearly up the dirt road that passes, at around 2020m altitude, below the M. Elmo ski lift (route always well marked by signs).

Reaching the top station of the lift and passing by the side of the Reinold Messner haus (keep to the right) the route is unambiguous and cuts across all the southern slopes of M. elmo reaching the Boundary Saddle a short distance from the hut. With a steeper uphill section (keep to the displuvial) you reach the Sillaner Hutte at M. Tovo Alto at 2447m.
