What to do at high altitude

Some of the proposed activities require adequate physical and technical preparation as they take place in a high mountain context. Weather forecasts must be checked in advance, and the itineraries evaluated based on your experience. We recommend tackling these excursions accompanied by professional guides to enjoy these environments in the name of safety.

The Sappada basin is a mountain area suspended at 1250 metres above sea level and enclosed between the peaks of the Pesarine Dolomites and the peaks of the main Carnic chain. In Sappada, you can breathe the pleasant air of traditions that blend into the surrounding nature, forming a deep connection. It is an uncontaminated environment with the waters of the Piave river as its main feature, flowing from the peaks to the Adriatic Sea. There are also the Olbe lakes on the watershed summit and the springs along the walls of Mount Peralba that become waterfalls near the village and sink into the Acquatona gorge.

With chairlifts to discover mountain huts and hikes

Thanks to the Miravalle and Hochbolt chairlifts from the Sappada valley floor, it is possible to reach the 2000 metres of the “Rifugio 2000” shelter from which to start more or less demanding excursions to the nearby peaks that were the scene of high-altitude battles during the First World War.

Shelters accessible from the chairlift station:
-    Rifugio 2000 a 2000 m, info: closed in 2025 summer season
-    Casera Olbe at 2090 metres (non-managed)

Excursions to enjoy when you reach the peak:
Laghi d’Olbe
From Rifugio 2000, you descend the first stretch along the ski run until, after about 250 metres, on the right, the signs indicate the direction to your destination. The lakes are located on the vast plateau of Olbe, made of small hills, large basins and grassy ledges, under the jagged ridge that extends from Mount Righile towards Mount Ferro. The three basins, of which the eastern one is the most noteworthy for its size and depth, take up the ancient valleys dating back to the last glaciation. The white peaks of mount Righile are reflected in their green waters
