Where: Saisera Valley,
Tarvisio (Udine)
(Julian Alps, Montasio range, Saisera Valley)
Difference in height: + 550
Duration: 4.5 hours
Difficulty: medium
The starting point is the parking area of the former powder magazine in the
Saisera Valley (960 m), 4 km away from
Valbruna.
Go west along the road that shortly leads to the
Malga Saisera hut (1004 m) seeing the northern face of Montasio.
The
CAI path no. 611 starts shortly afterwards from the Florit Chapel, going up hairpin bends in the forest and reaching the panoramic hillock where the Rifugio
Grego Alpine Hut stands (1389 m, open on winter weekends). Here you will enjoy the view over Montasio, Jof Fuart, Grande Nabois, cupolone de Mangart and the mounts of Malborghetto dominated by Jof di Miezegnot. From the Alpine hut, go west through the forest, following the CAI path no. 651, until reaching the charming Sompdogna Tarn, surrounded by larch trees.
Proceed towards Jof di Sompdogna, where you will reach the ridge that recalls the old border. Here the paths branch: Jof di Sompdogna southwards, Dogna Valley westwards. Keep going north along the ridge, following the traces of Italian constructions and
trenches of World War I, you will get to the top of the morainic hillock (1470 m), from which you will descend eastwards to the Sella Sompdogna saddle (1290 m). Here you will find the sign "10 minuti al Rifugio" (ten minutes to the Alpine hut) to go back to the Rifugio Grego Alpine hut. Finally, from the Alpine hut, follow the same way you came along the
CAI path no. 611
