Snowshoeing: Malghe Tartoi and Tragonia

Snowshoe tours in Friuli Venezia Giulia

Where: Forni di Sopra (Carnia, Udine)

An itinerary to be followed with snowshoes to discover the enchanting beauty of the mountains of Forni di Sopra with the larch and fir woods spaced out by the stavoli, the typical mountain houses

Departure: near the Piazza Centrale in Forni di Sopra (Hamlet of Vico)
Difficulty: forest trail only - low difficulty
Difference in height: about 700 and 800 m
Signs: CAI 208 and 211

Through the forest trails, carefully beaten, which from Forni di Sopra lead to the malghe (shepherd's huts) Tartoi (8 Km) and Tragonia (9 Km), with snowshoes you will enter the larch and fir woods, where you will enjoy the nice company of the roe deer, the chamois or the black grouse. If you pay attention, you may get the chance to see the tracks of deer that at night populate these areas.
After a nearly 4-km-long walk, you will reach "Puonsas e Duvies" where, after fording the Tartoiana stream, you will be able to keep walking on a less sloping road, reaching the fork of the 6 km, and to decide whether to go on towards Tragonia or Tartoi.
From the "Risumiela" saddle (or saddle of the cross), which is situated in the direction of Tragonia after the casera hut, you will enjoy a breathtaking view over the surrounding landscape and over the town of Sauris.
You will find the casere huts open, but not managed: therefore, be extremely careful when you stop there. Remember that the trails, although beaten, are not controlled, therefore access is under the responsibility of the hikers. Before starting the tours, always look at the snow-weather report: in the upper part, some areas to be crossed are at risk of avalanche. Moreover, the road has no protection nets and barriers and may be icy in some parts.
