On Mt. Fara

A dense beech wood leads us to wide, panoramic views

The itinerary develops along the northern slope of Mt. Fara, one of the first elevations just before the plain at the southern edge of the Carnic Prealps. Especially in the stretch along the summit ridge, the view opens from the plain to the Adriatic Sea, other than on the chains at the back.
Mt. Fara's western side is deeply carved by the gorge of the Cellina Creek (Regional natural reservation), which assumes the characteristic of a spectacular canyon.

Description:
From the parking lot, take the traffic-restricted road leading to Casera del Monte Fara. Almost immediately, abandon the road and follow CAI 983 trail to the left. It runs with some curve up to the near La Croce Pass (756mt), which was the passage used in the past as connection between the plain and Valcellina.
A few meters before the pass, the route runs up to the right, on an easy walkway among the trees. The trail runs up evenly and for a long stretch it follows the easter ridge –at first through a wood that blocks out any panoramic view.

Gaining altitude, the panoramic glimpses (especially on the nearby Mt. Jouf), are more frequent. You’ll walk into a fork with detour for the dairy hut. Ignore it and keep following CAI 983 that passes along the edge of the ridge, which narrows and shows to the left a very steep slope. Arrive to a small saddle, from where you can enjoy a wide panorama over the plateau below and farther on on the Adriatic Sea. From the saddle, you can glimpse the peak. The trail now proceeds again into a wood, among rocky outcrops. Shortly later, you’ll arrive to the wide plateau at the top.

The summit cross stands slightly below the top, in the ideal position to overlook the plain, other than the surrounding uplands, starting from the nearby Jôf di Maniago, Raut and Resettum.
For the return trip, hike down the outward route, passing through the summit plateau until you come across trail 983 that you will take in the opposite direction (west). Follow the panoramic ridge along the track, paying attention not to take the very steep grassy slope overlaying Valcellina.. Proceed along the wood’s edge and in a few minutes you’ll arrive to a fork where you abandon the CAI 983 roadmark and turn right (indication on a rock) into the beech wood, toward the dairy hut. The route down develops along a track inside the wood.

After walking into the forest road, proceed for a short time into the beech wood until you reach the edge of the old Casera del Monte fara rangeland. The view opens on the Resettum-Raut ridge. Look out for the track among the vegetation, so to go for the visibile buildings below.

From the dairy hut (954mt), hike down the asphalt road that leads you back to the start point.

Access:
A28 Venice-Pordenone, exit to Pordenone, then follow the indications of SR251 to Maniago, Montereale Valcellina e Valcellina
From Val Cellina SS 251, and right after the Mt. Fara tunnel, turn right toward Andreis. Instead of driving into the built-up area, proceed on the right to Bosplans and Forcella Pala Barzana. After passing the Bosplans hamlet, shortly after some curve and after a brusque bend to the right, you can park at the next bend, in an open space where to the right starts a carriageway.
