Rio Budrin

Tributary to the right of the Natisone, the Budrin presents a very interesting course, rich with beautiful waterfalls.
Immersed in the splendid Natisone Valleys, the route develops inside a wooded area, and it is characterized by rappels of limited height but also by several leaps and tobogas. Irregular but fun, it offers glimpses of remarkable grandeur. The water flow is usually scarce, but the flash floods can be outstanding, with a rapid downflow. During summertime, it is recommended walking after a period of rains that increased its flow rate.

Description

Take SS 54 from Cividale toward Slovenia. At Stupizza, take a dirt road to the left, right after the first houses. Follow it until you are nearby a (non-vehicular) bridge that crosses the Natisone river. Leave the car in the small open space near the bridge.
Downstream parking lot coordinates: 46.200206, 13.471169
Upstream access without shuttle
Cross the bridge and take trail 735 (CAI indications) that leads to Montefosca. At Montefosca village, the trail leads into an asphalt road. Proceed along the road until you enter the built up area, then to the left, between the houses, the trail starts descending. Proceed down in the wood until you arrive to an ancient small bridge over Budrin Brook.
Upstream parking lot coordinates: 46.198778, 13.4425
Upstream access with shuttle
Drive back with the second car toward Cividale. At Loch-Linder, turn right toward Montefosca. At Montefoscam turn right toward the church. Right after the belfry, turn left and leave the car in the open space in front of the church. From here, it is possible to shortly walk the road by foot up the village. Here, intercept the trail that in 10 minutes leads you to the bridge over Budrin Brook.
To unload the gear, rather than turning after the belfry, you may proceed on forest road (no throughfare), asphalt road first and then dirt road until a small bridge and fork where you stop only to unload the gear. The entrance to the creek is only 5 minutes away from here.

After the last rappel, follow the creek until there is the chance to walk out the bed to the left bank. Shortly later, walk across the track of a trail that becomes more and more visible. After flanking the creek, it gradually abandons it until it leads you to the meadows nearby the visitor center “La casa degli orsi”. Proceed until the bridge over the Natisone. After crossing it, you’ll arrive to the cars.
How to read the data sheet
C = rappel equipped point
AN = natural ancorage
MC = handrail
PI = halfway point
DEV = Deviation
DIS = downclimb
TB = toboga
TF = leap
The notation Dx (right) and Sx (left), relative to the rappel points, the handrail, deviations, etc., always indicate the creek orographic bank, where they are positioned. For instance, DEV Sx indicates that the deviation lays on the left bank, and not to the left of the canyoner that will face the deviation.
