Along the ridge between Pramollo and Mt. Corona

Discovering the traces of life at the beginning of the Paleozoic

The itinerary runs along the elevations of the panoramic border ridge between Italy and Austria, among ancient mountain pastures and rich blooms, in one of the most known places to the paleontology researchers.

The Pramollo area is known throughout the world for its Carboniferous-dated flora. The ancient rock layers, here, hold fossils known and studied since the end of the '800s, due to said fossils' abundance and variety. Among these layers, the most famous site is located on the western slope of Mt. Corona across the Italian-Austrian border.

Digging to extract fossils is strictly forbidden since long time.

Description:
Nearby the hotels at Passo Pramollo (1530mt), take the easy forest road (CAI 504) that runs at the foot of Mt. Auernig’ southern slope and crosses wide rangelands.
Shortly later, you’ll arrive to Casera Auernig (1609mt), where you can enjoy a vast panorama. Now take CAI 501 trail to the left (also indicated as Bepi della Schiava). It leads up a slight slope toward the pass between Carnizza and Auernig peaks, at first through a sparse wood and then through an open grassy plateau, partly marshy.

From here the route leads to Mt.Carnizza’s grassy peak (elevation 1950mt), following the border’s ridge. Here you can enjoy a complete view on the nearby peaks in Austrian territory. On the Tauris, northern up, and on the Julian peaks south over the Malvuerich crest. Still trailing along the border, the trail slightly declines. Along this stretch, vegetation is low, with pines, heather brushes, blueberry and gentianella in late summer. Going down, you will meet rhododendrons and alders, some gorgeous glade and other wetlands before arriving to Carnizza Pass (elevation 1675mt)
Mt. Coona (elevation 1832mt) can be reached following the same CAI 501 roadmark, hiking up the slight western slope to the broad summit plateau, where you can enjoy a wide panorama. The peak is characterized by typical steps made of sharply stratified rocks.

Before reaching the top, at a plateau you’ll find the indications to visit the nearby fossil sites: it’s a mighty bank of laminated mudstones in a evenly-parallel stratification that preserves some very fossil plants-rich layers. In some cases, we’re talking about actual accumulations of vegetable remains. In the area around the elevation, several bands are characterized by thinly-layered debris of pelitic rocks derived by the research of generations of researchers.
From the top, hike down south among pines and meadows, following the sporadic roadmarks and crossing a small valley where the marmots are numerous. Proceed towards Casera For (elevation 1614mt), where you’ll take the easy carriageway (CAI 504) parallel to the slop leading to Casera Auernig, and from here to Pramollo Pass (elevation 1530mt).

Access:
Starting from Pontebba downtown (reachable from state road 13 Pontebbana or from Highway A23 with namesake exit), following the indications to Pramollo Pass, drive up the tortuous road leading to the passage. After reaching the pass, you can park in the appointed, wide parking lots.
