Austro-Hungarian cemetery of Fogliano Redipuglia

Just one kilometre away from the Memorial of Redipuglia, the Austro-Hungarian cemetery of Fogliano Redipuglia accommodates the remains of 14,550 soldiers who fell in battle in this area. You can easily reach it on road SS305 towards Fogliano, right after the municipal cemetery.

Outside, two inscriptions, one in Italian and the other one in German, remind visitors that this site was restored by the Provincial Administration of Styria and the volunteers of the Styrian Young Firemen in 1974, and then reorganised by the Austrian Association of the Black Cross in 1989. On the entrance door, you can clearly read the wording Im Leben und im Tode vereint, "United in life or death".

Once inside, you can walk through an avenue lined by cypresses leading to the great tomb, where 7000 unknown soldiers were buried. Above the tomb, a bilingual plaque commemorates the soldiers who died for their Motherland. The remaining part of the cemetery hosts the tombs of 2550 identified soldiers, marked by small memorial stones in concrete. Walking back to the exit, near the perimeter wall, you can see two more common tombs accommodating 5000 unknown soldiers.
