Women’s art in a historic location: the Biennale Internazionale Donna at Magazzino 26

In 2017, I was enchanted by the title of an art exhibition in the city: the Biennale Internazionale Donna.
The first edition started on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and this second edition, which already from the turnout at its inauguration seems to promise great success, opened on 8th March, International Women’s Day.
More than 100 (140 to be precise) artists from all over the world took part: from Australia, China, India, Africa, the Americas and various countries in Europe. It was an all-female showcase that expressed all the smallest nuances of art: paintings, sculptures and art installations of various kinds.

At the first edition, some things had left me lost for words, but at this edition I was impressed by the further research and the different ideas that art is able to develop.
The renewed historical location of Magazzino 26, deserves further mention.
Year built: 1880. Area covered: 9,000 square metres.
Research shows how the initial project, highlighting the Central European nature of Trieste, recalled the neo-Gothic and neo-Romanesque style of the Speichestadt warehouses in Bremen and of the Kesselhaus, the hydrodynamic power station.
The turrets above the finishing cornices, the richly decorated mansards even higher than the central structures, give Magazzino 26 its magnificent aspect. Perhaps also due to its impressive yet stylistically well-balanced appearance, it was chosen as the venue for the “Biennale Diffusa” on the occasion of the Venice Biennale in 2011.
After the renovation of its rooms, three floors are now used for conferences, museums and art exhibitions.
With two floors suitable for hosting the showcase of a large art repertoire, it stands out for its division into crafts and applied arts, art and business sections.

Of the spaces within the venue for installations, two are the most interesting.
A “green” installation created by a set designer of Trieste, which has two aims: to make contact with nature and to bring out the artistic aspect with an interplay of mirrors.
The second one, developed by a young scientist, links the heartbeat to a mechanism that allows drops of water to fall into a container at the rate of the heartbeat of those who use the machine.
The offer at the Biennale is complemented with photographic and poetic works, clothing made by companies owned by women, and sculptures.

The Biennale Internazionale Donna (BID) is open until 26th May 2019.
