Photo hunting in the meadows of the Tagliamento river

The “Grave are the areas surrounding the bed of the Tagliamento, the big river that crosses the region. This is a stony and apparently arid land that hides natural biodiversity of rare beauty. From the main road, the former provincial “Val d’Arzino” in Sant’Osvaldo in the province of San Martino al Tagliamento, a dirt track leads to the meadows along the embankment which are the last keepers, among the stony vines, of many flower species that offer their colours in every season. In the small town, you cannot fail to notice the beautiful but deteriorating Venetian villa, the church and the farmhouses, places still laden with the memories of a small and supportive community, now home to a wine estate. A quick bike ride or a slow walk are fine to reach the destination in a few hundred metres and the "photo hunt" can begin. The meadows are mostly private property but the flower species are present and clearly visible even along the roadside and the embankment. It is also possible to enter the meadows but it must be done with respect so as not to trample the grass. The bright yellow of the broom and euphorbia, the purple of the numerous orchids and wild gladioli, the white of the intrusive ligustrum or the swaying filipendula, the wild floating of the feather grass, the contrast of red poppies and those of the white acacia welcome you in spring and summer, like an open timeless garden. Looking at the photos you will notice the perfection of the shapes of these wonders of nature and you may find that you have also captured the colours of the butterflies.

Where to stay

Anna Maria Bellot

I love to walk on the plains but also in the mountains, discovering everything about the environment around me, the history, the culture, the traditions and the landscapes and to fix these images through photography. I have been collaborating for several years with two historic associations of Valvasone, the Erasmus Cultural Club of Valvasone and the Association for Concerts of Ancient Music, whose aims are to enhance the Friuli culture and language and the artistic, historical and environmental assets of which the regional territory is rich. I live in one of the most beautiful villages of Friuli Venezia Giulia, with a medieval centre and an area lapped by the Tagliamento river, which is rich in biodiversity and should be discovered at a slow pace.
