In Spilimbergo visiting osterie and bacheri (taverns and inns)

The "Saturday in the village" by Leopardi well represents the image that is captured arriving in the charming town of Spilimbergo during a Saturday morning: it is market day and people gather along the Pedestrian path as they have always done, an open sky living room, where there is a tavern for every 170 inhabitants.
Since the middle ages, the city has had an important commercial role, especially for its strategic position along the ancient communication routes near the ford on the Tagliamento River and since then the taverns have served as strategic meeting places for the development of business.
Many Friuli traditions speak of the centrality of wine and the public sharing of the so-called "tajut":  Significant moments of life, demonstrations of friendship or hospitality, weddings, funerals, signing of contracts or the end of a normal working day are always sealed by a meeting at the osteria.

By contacting the tourist office of the municipality you can get to know a "City Welcomer" who, for no charge, will allow you to experience the life that still pulsates between the two fundamental poles of the folk community: Church and osteria.
At the osteria “Al buso” you will also be pleased by the beauty of the many photographs hanging on the walls that talk of the local places, taking you on a voyage through time.

In Spilimbergo the only bàcaro (a Popular Venetian inn) left in Friuli still survives after some oil and wine traders moved north to open shops and wineries from the ancient port of the Serenissima, Trani, in the late 19th century and often did very well.

The osteria’s and inns, placed at the top of the districts arranged in a "comb-shape" respect to the Main street, can still be accessed today by two entrances; This once allowed young men to cross the city from east to west for their necessary "drinking" stops without going down the public road, and so were sheltered from prying eyes.

A beautiful experience even today, but with stops from inn to inn, to get to know the soul of a city!
